  • Recurring Credit Card Contributions
    • Recurring credit card gifts may be made monthly, quarterly, or in annual payments. Charges are processed upon receipt. Recurring charges are processed on the first and fifteenth of each month. Pledge payments also can be arranged. To take advantage of recurring credit card charges, please call the Development Department at 412-365-2541.
  • Stock Transfers
    • Stock gifts can be made and handled by wire transfer, hand delivery, or mail. Gifts of qualified assets that have been held for at least one year and one day, such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or other appreciated long-term properties, offer a two-fold savings. Donors avoid paying capital gains on the increased value of the stock while receiving a tax deduction for the average value of the stock on the date of the transfer.

Electronic transfer is the safest and fastest way to give stock to the Zoo. In addition to being convenient, the speed of this type of transfer may capitalize on market fluctuations, allowing you to maximize your gift to the Zoo. For information on how to transfer stock to the Zoo, please contact the Development Department at 412-365-2541.

  • Matching Gifts
    • Many companies have matching gift programs. These programs match your donation on a one-for-one or two-for-two basis, doubling or even triple the impact of your gift. Before you donate, please check with your personnel office for additional information or to obtain a matching gift form. Your donation will help support the Pittsburgh Zoo's education, wildlife care, and conservation programs.
  • Planned Giving
    • Making a planned gift to the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium offers many personal and financial benefits, such as increasing your cash flow, allowing a charitable deduction, avoiding capital gains, and reducing estate taxes. There are many ways to make a gift that also takes into consideration your personal circumstances.

By naming the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium as a beneficiary in a will, you make a personal affirmation of the value of a world-class Zoo to our community. A bequest may be tailored to individual needs and interests so that the donor gains a unique opportunity to provide for the Zoo and loved ones. Donors and their attorneys are encouraged to discuss specific restrictions they wish to include in bequest language with the Zoo's Senior Development Officer to ensure that their wishes can be fulfilled and meet the Zoo's long-term objectives. For more information, please contact the Development department at 412-365-2540 or donate@pittsburghzoo.org.

      Gifts of Life Insurance
By naming the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium as the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy, you may receive a charitable deduction for the approximate amount of the present-day cash value of the policy. You may either transfer an existing policy to the Zoo or purchase a new one. If you choose to continue to pay the premiums on a policy transferred to the Zoo, you can deduct the amount of the premiums as charitable deductions.

Charitable Remainder Trust or Charitable Gift Annuity
A donor who wishes to make a significant gift to the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium now, but prefers to retain the income earned by the assets, may want to consider a Life Income Gift. Both unitrusts and gift annuities allow a donor to give to the Zoo while providing life income to the donor and/or loved ones. In many cases, the income paid on such gifts is greater than currently paid on certificates of deposit or similar investments. Also, this type of gift may reduce estate taxes.

      IRA Charitable Rollover
Retirement assets are perhaps one of the best gifts to make to the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. If they are bequeathed to anyone except a spouse or charity, they may be subject to extremely high rates of taxation (both estate and income). Thanks to charitable IRA legislation, you may be able to make lifetime gifts using funds from your individual retirement accounts (IRAs) without any undesirable tax effects. You may contribute funds this way if you are 70 and one half years old or older at the time of the gift, the gifts do not total more than $100,000, and you transfer funds directly from an IRA. Please note that you can make a gift from your IRA even if you don't have to take a required minimum distribution. Simply contact your IRA custodian for the forms necessary to transfer your desired gift amount directly to the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. Please note that the IRA charitable rollover has not been extended for 2014 and beyond, but on more than one occasion the law has been extended retroactively, effectively keeping it in effect since its initial passage.
