Animals are completely fascinating. Join us for these one-day adventures at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium to gain first hand experience in the study of animals and their habitats! These programs are designed to aid Cadettes and Seniors in completing their Interest Projects. The programs are held from 9am to 3:30pm, which includes time for a 30-minute lunch that the scout brings with her.

Wildlife Interest Project
Researchers and scientists study wildlife all around the world, both in captivity and in the wild, for a variety of reasons.  Perhaps the most important reason is to learn how to conserve a particular species.  This program will show you some methods employed by wildlife researchers when observing their subjects.  Students will complete all seven of the requirements.  Five of the requirements will be covered on the day of the program.  One requirement must be completed before the program, and one is to be completed after.  Students will receive information on completing the final project during class.

Before the program
The Zoo will provide participants with materials to complete one requirement prior to the program.  Please bring this worksheet to the Zoo on the day of the program.

During the program scouts will:

  • Study equipment used by wildlife biologists. (Technology #1)
  • Build an ethogram and use it to study animal behavior. (Skill Builder #4)
  • Learn to use field guides and nature journals to identify animal tracks, tree leaves, etc. (Skill Builder #2&3).
  • Interview an animal keeper to find out how she started in this field, and what she does on a daily basis. (Career Exploration #2)
  • Create a game about ecology to play with younger students. (Service Project #1)

From Shore to Sea Interest Project
The oceans of the world cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface, impacting life on the entire planet.  Join us in the PPG Aquarium as we unlock the mysteries of the deep.  This program introduces all of the requirements.  Students will receive information for completing one of the requirements after the class.

During the program scouts will:

  • Uncover the secrets of tide pools and shorelines. (Skill Builder #1)
  • Find out what scientists are using to explore the deepest reaches of the ocean. (Technology #2)
  • Capture the ocean's beauty by creating a collection of poems about the ocean. (Skill Builder #1 & Career Exploration #6)
  • Create an educational game for younger girls. (Service Project #4)
  • Find out what kinds of training, skills, & education are needed for careers in marine sciences. (Career Exploration #1&4)
