Zoo Camp

Welcome to 2017 Animal Adventures Summer Zoo Camp! We have many exciting things planned for this summer including two new camps in July, Dino Days and Veterinary Camp. Program themes are designed to be fun, engaging, and age-appropriate for each group. All classes are conducted by experienced teachers and college students, each of whom is current with the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History (ChildLine), and FBI Criminal Background Check.

  • Policies, Procedures, and FAQs
    • Thank you for enrolling your child in the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium’s Summer Zoo Camp program! Please review our policies and FAQs prior to registering your camper. Confirmations will be emailed at the beginning of May once sufficient enrollment is reached. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

      Rescheduling/Cancellation Policy

If you are unable to attend camp on your originally scheduled date please contact us at learn@pittsburghzoo.org or 412-365-2528 as soon as possible to reschedule. Please pay close attention when choosing your date, as rescheduling requests are not guaranteed. All cancellations must be made at least 2 weeks prior to the start of your scheduled camp week. The Zoo will retain a 20% processing fee. There are no refunds for any cancellations made less than 2 weeks prior to the start of your scheduled camp week.

      Camper Drop-off

Zoo Camp drop off is located in the main Zoo parking lot (do not park in the Zoo’s Education Building staff lot). Drop-off is between 9 - 9:15 a.m. Please accompany your children to the parking lot lawn where signage will direct you to the age-appropriate area. Be sure to check your child in with his/her instructor each morning. If you arrive late, please escort your camper to the Education Building by entering the Zoo through one of the exit gates. The Zoo has a strict quarantine policy that prohibits pets from entering our grounds, including the parking lot lawn. Please do not bring your pets to camp drop-off or pick-up.

      Camper Pick-up

Pick up is at 12 p.m. for half day camp and 4 p.m. for full day camp. Zoo Camp groups will return to the same spot in the parking lot lawn where they gathered at the beginning of the day. The campers must stay with their respective groups, even if a parent or guardian is waiting, until the Zoo Camp teacher obtains the proper guardian signature.  A staff member will wait with a camper until the proper guardian signs the camper out. In cases of extended delay in pick up, or extreme weather, staff may escort the camper back to the Education Building. If you are late picking up your camper and no one is in the parking lot lawn area, please text 412-956-1477 or go to Admission Booth #5 for assistance.  Please allow extra time to park, as we are opening two new exhibits this summer and are expecting large crowds.  We appreciate your cooperation and patience.

      Special Needs

An aide must accompany a camper with special needs if the camper requires one-to-one attention. The Zoo requires that all adults in the classrooms have all of the following clearances: PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA Criminal Record Check (ChildLine), and FBI Criminal Background Check (fingerprinting). These clearances must be less than one year old. Please send copies of these clearances with the participation form on which you have noted that an aide will be accompanying your camper.  Aides will not be permitted in the classroom without all clearances. There are no exceptions.

      Medication Policy

Please indicate on your participation form any medication that your child will be taking while at Zoo Camp. We require that all EpiPens/inhalers be carried in a fanny pack or backpack to be worn on the camper at all times. Please label the fanny pack or backpack with your child’s name. Parents/guardians are notified immediately if their child faces an emergency and uses his or her EpiPen. A camper is allowed to carry his/her medication and self-medicate. All medications (prescription and over-the-counter) must be stored in the original product packaging and labeled with the camper’s name. Prescription medication(s) must also include a label with the medication’s name and dosage instructions, including time of administration of medicine, as well as the prescribing physician’s name and telephone number. Zoo education staff will not be held responsible for housing/storing medication(s). Please provide a written statement from the child's medical provider and parent/legal guardian that states that the child is capable of self-medication without assistance. Zoo Camp staff will not dispense medications of any type (prescription or over-the-counter) to camp participants of any age. The staff may assist in the administration of certain life-saving medications (EpiPens, inhalers, allergy medication for severe allergies), if necessary upon written consent of the parent(s)/legal guardian(s) and/or physician’s orders for medical emergencies.

      Snacks/Lunch

Each day your child will be served a snack with a beverage. These snacks are not intended to be meals. Please list any food allergies on the participation form and return it to the Zoo prior to camp week. Parents/guardians may send special snacks with campers who have allergies or special dietary requirements. Full-day campers should pack a non-perishable lunch, or include a freezer pack with an insulated lunchbox, Monday through Thursday. A pizza lunch will be provided on Friday. Campers may bring a reusable water bottle (with a strap) to drink from throughout the day.

      Dress

Campers should dress in casual clothes such as t-shirts and shorts and comfortable, sturdy shoes, such as tennis shoes. Open-toed shoes or sandals are not recommended. In the event of light rain campers will still tour the Zoo as planned. Please send the appropriate rain gear (jacket or poncho) with your camper. For safety reasons campers will not be permitted to carry umbrellas.

      Safety

All campers are required to wear Zoo-supplied nametags during their entire Zoo Camp day. In both the Education Complex and throughout the Zoo, Zoo Camp staff members carry camp rosters, participation forms, and first-aid kits with them at all times.

      Injuries

The Zoo has a first-aid station on grounds and staff members who are certified in first-aid. A representative from the Zoo will both notify you and call for emergency assistance if a serious injury occurs. It is very important that you supply us with the appropriate contact numbers on your participation form should we need to reach you in the unlikely event of an emergency.

      Inclement Weather

In the event of light rain campers will tour the Zoo as planned. Campers will not tour outside if there is thunder, lightning, or dangerous wind. If dangerous weather occurs at departure time, we will wait inside the Education Complex until it is safe to go outside. Please wait in your vehicle in the main parking lot. Once the threat of dangerous weather passes campers will be brought to the main parking lot for pick-up.

      Behavior Policy

The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium has the right to remove a camper from Zoo Camp at any time. If a continual behavior problem persists, one or more of the following consequences will be taken:
Zoo Camp staff will discuss the behavior with the camper.
Zoo Camp staff will discuss the behavior with the parent/guardian.
Parent/guardian will be notified by a Zoo Camp supervisor and the child will be sent home immediately or told that he/she will not be allowed to return the following day.
*Note: There are no refunds when a child’s own behavior requires he/she be sent home.  Please be sure to register your child in the age-appropriate session to ensure a successful camp experience for all.  All campers must be fully potty trained.

      Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I have to register online?  When will I receive my camp confirmation?

You do not have to register online. We hope that you will find our online registration process quick and easy, but you may mail in your registration form if you prefer. Confirmations for online registrations are immediate, however we reserve the right to cancel any session with insufficient enrollment.  All registrants will be emailed a confirmation once we have reached sufficient enrollment, beginning in May. Not all confirmations will be emailed at the same time.  We do not offer telephone registrations at any time. Please note that there is a convenience fee for each session/class when registering online.

What if the week I wanted to register for is full?

Unfortunately there are strict caps put on class sizes and you will have to choose another week. We are not able to register your child for a session that is full. We appreciate your understanding.

My child wants to attend with a friend.  How can I be sure they'll be in the same session?

If you register online, please send a brief email to reservations@pittsburghzoo.org with your child's name and his/her friend's name and the dates they will be attending. If you choose to register by mail, all children attending together must be registered on the same form. Payment for all children must accompany the form.

How many weeks can my child attend Zoo Camp?

Zoo Camp sessions are designed for campers to attend only one week of camp per summer in either the half-day or full-day sessions. The same subject matter is covered each week. Please register for only one week so that other children have the opportunity to enjoy Zoo Camp too. Registrations for more than one week will be handled in the following manner: for mail in registrations, we will return your form and check to you. For online registrations, duplicate enrollments will be canceled and a refund will be issued to your credit card.  Campers of the appropriate ages may attend one week of Zoo Camp plus the Dino Camp or Veterinary Camp.

What if I need to pick up my child prior to the scheduled time?

If it becomes necessary to pick up your child early on a specific day, arrangements can be made with the teacher/counselor when signing in on that day. Any emergency arising after sign-in time can be addressed by texting our emergency number 412-979-1477.

Can my younger child attend the same class as his/her older sibling or friend even though he/she does not meet the age parameters of the class?

No. Our programs are designed for specific age groups.  Please do not ask us to put younger children in older age groups.  While we understand that many young children are enrolled in full-day programs throughout the school year, it is our experience that younger children cannot keep up with the faster pace of older age groups.  Therefore, for the benefit of all of the campers, only children of the appropriate age will be admitted to the class.  We reserve the right to reenroll any child in the correct age group, as well as the right to remove any camper who was intentionally enrolled in an older age group.  In such cases, no refunds will be given.  Please see our behavior policy above.  This helps to ensure a positive experience for all, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

What is the difference between the half-day and full-day sessions of the same category?

Half-day and full-day sessions are essentially the same, but with a more tightly structured program in the half-day session. Full-day camp sessions afford instructors and campers a more leisurely pace and the chance to explore topics more fully, with time for additional activities.

      What is the cancellation policy?

If you must cancel, a refund can be issued to the credit card with which you paid. If you paid by check, refunds will take six to eight weeks to process. The Zoo will retain a 20 percent processing fee regardless of your payment method. If you cancel less than fourteen days prior to the session, or after the session has begun, no refund can be given.  We encourage you to reschedule if at all possible.

What if my child is sick and misses a day of camp?

We do not offer refunds for missed camp days, and campers are not permitted to make up missed days during a different week. Should an illness or family emergency arise resulting in missing two or more days, please contact us at 412-365-2528 to reschedule.

Can you accommodate a child with special needs?

Yes, we will accommodate a child with special needs. Please note that the Zoo does not employ specific individuals certified and trained to handle special needs. If your child has special needs that require one-to-one attention, an aide should accompany him or her. The aide is required to provide the Zoo with a current PA Child Abuse History Clearance (ChildLine), PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Background Check (fingerprinting) and will not be permitted in the classroom without them.

      What is Extended Care?

Extended Care is supervised care for your child beyond Zoo Camp hours. It is available for children ages 4-13, and it is only available in select weeks (6/19, 7/10, 8/7). Half-day campers may attend morning sessions only.  Full-day campers may attend both morning and afternoon sessions. There is a $10 charge for each morning (7:45 - 9 a.m.) and/or afternoon (4 - 5:15 p.m.) care session. With registration, you may drop off your child for Extended Care as early as 7:45 a.m. and pick your child up from as late as 5:15 p.m. Cost is $10 per session, per child. We are unable to offer refunds or credit vouchers for any missed or canceled sessions.

How do I register for Extended Care?

Registration is now available online. Click on the Extended Care tab on the Zoo Camp page for more information.

Can I get a receipt for my payment?

Yes, we are happy to issue a receipt for your payment. It is our policy to not issue a receipt until after the child has attended camp, so please email reservations@pittsburghzoo.org during the week of your child's session to request a receipt.

If you have any additional questions, please email learn@pittsburghzoo.org or call 412-365-2528.

Lights, camera, action!  You and your fellow campers will work in groups to write, direct, and star in your own "Commercial for Conservation." Throughout the week, we'll discuss current conservation topics, investigate the problems facing endangered species, and brainstorm possilbe colutions to environmental issues. Each day's activities will be inspired by popular TV shows, and our week will culminate with a commercial premier party for family and friends.

      About Veterinary Camp

If you are interested in becoming a veterinarian, this camp is for you! Work alongside zoo vets as they care for our more than 9,000 resident animals. Through tours, demonstrations, and hands-on opportunities, you will discover what veterinary medicine is all about.  Checking in on patients, sharpening your blow-darting skills, and viewing samples under a microscope are all in a day's work.
