The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is a progressive, dynamic and exciting work environment undergoing tremendous growth in all programs. The zoo is a 77-acre facility that is home to more than 4,000 animals representing 434 species in a diverse collection, including an elephant breeding program, great apes, and a major aquarium. The zoo also has a 700-acre off-site facility in Somerset County. The zoo is currently constructing a 20,000-square-feet Animal Health and Education Center which is scheduled to open in February 2012. The Associate Veterinarian would join the hospital team, which consists of the Director of Animal Health, two certified veterinary technicians, and the hospital administrative assistant.
Responsibilities/ Duties:
- Daily responsibilities include implementing and monitoring the preventive health care program, medical and surgical case management, emergency treatments, medical records, enrichment evaluations, and post-mortem exams of the collection animals at both the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium and the International Conservation Center.
- Responsible for the supervision of hospital staff in the department head’s absence, collaborating on research projects, and training of both veterinary students and veterinary technician students.
- Responsible for coordinating incoming and outgoing animal shipments including communication with outside veterinarians, health certificates, diet analysis, and pre-shipment and quarantine examinations.
Qualifications:
- DVM, VMD from an AVMA-accredited veterinary college with three years of clinical experience in a zoo or aquarium. Preference given to those candidates with residency training in zoo or aquatic animal medicine.
- USDA accreditation, including accreditation to perform TB tests.
- DEA licensure.
- Pennsylvania state veterinary license must be acquired within six months of start date.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills, along with a willingness to be an integral part of the management team.
Physical Requirements:
Manual dexterity is required to operate machinery and restraining devices, including personal computer, fax machine, copier, etc. Must be physically able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Work involves standing, walking, bending, reaching, crawling, crouching, etc. for periods of time. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of 50 to 70 pounds. Position may require occasional off-site driving. Must be able to work in various weather conditions, as well as weekends and evenings as required.
