Think you know a lot about animals?

This summer, we are giving kids a new way to learn about Zoo animals. The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is the first host site for WQED’s iQ Zoo, an innovative program that combines smartphone technology, PBS KIDS GO! multimedia content, and dynamic information about Zoo animals!

iQ Zoo lets kids access audio clips, videos, and other information about animals while at the Zoo. All that’s needed is an internet-enabled smartphone (e.g. iPhones and Android devices) that can scan QR (quick response) codes using a free mobile app.

It’s free to participate. All you have to do is visit the Zoo!

How do you participate?

Throughout the African Savanna, Tropical Forest, and Water’s Edge, look for iQ Zoo signs near select animals. Simply scan the QR code that looks like this:

lionqr

Your phone will take you to a website with fun information about that animal. Kids can even add animals to a virtual zoo that they can manage from home.

Need a QR code reader? Download one of the many free applications – like Red Laser, Zebra, or Barcode Scanner – from your carrier’s app store online.

About iQ Zoo:

Funding for iQ Zoo was made possible by a competitive grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and PBS KIDS Interactive. iQ Zoo represents the first time a PBS station has used QR-code technology to leverage the capacity and reach of PBS content in partnership with a community-based educational facility. The project is part of WQED’s educational strategy, iQ: smartmedia, which is a new paradigm in multimedia that harnesses the power, inspiration, and creativity of new media and provides a framework for expression, learning, and collaboration.
