Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium receives Gold-Standard Seal of Excellence
(Pittsburgh) (2016) The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium has earned the prestigious Humane Conservation Program certification from the American Humane Association. The new gold-standard certification in animal care and welfare.
The Humane Conservation Program was launched by American Humane in June as the first-ever independent third party certification assuring humane treatment of animals living in zoos and aquariums. The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is one of only two zoological institutions and one of seven institutions nationally to receive this award. Other honorees include Georgia Aquarium, Vancouver Aquarium, Shedd Aquarium, and Brookfield Zoo.
The Humane Conservation Program is a rigorous independent third-party audit that determines strict adherence to standards developed by the American Humane Association’s Scientific Advisory Committee. The certification program evaluates many aspects of animal welfare including the wellbeing of each animal, excellent health and housing, positive social interactions within animal groups, and interactions between animals and keepers in safe and stimulating environments.
“We are thrilled and extremely honored to receive certification by American Humane,” says Dr. Barbara Baker, President & CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. “It was one of the most comprehensive and thorough inspections that I have experienced in my 26 years here at the Zoo. The AHA certificate highlights our strong commitment to ensuring our 9,000 individual animals are well taken care of in all aspects, including exhibits, enrichment, and veterinary care. Most importantly it demonstrates the continuous and trusting relationships that our keepers share with the animals and their dedication to the job every day.”
"I would like to congratulate the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium on receiving this prestigious award. I commend Dr. Baker and the entire staff for continuing to provide the highest standards of animal care and humane treatment."
