Position Title: Senior Education Specialist/ Teen Programs
Department: Conservation Education
Position Status: Salaried, Full Time
Position Summary:
This position creates, coordinates, and implements education programs and community engagement projects for teens and young adults (middle school, high school, and college age) at the Zoo.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Focus on the development, implementation and evaluation of the Zoo’s teen and young adult programs and camps;
- Works closely with schools and community groups to identify, co-design, and implement partnerships and programs to engage teens and young adults in conservation education, action, and advocacy;
- Work collaboratively with other Education Department colleagues to develop and implement other education programs at the Zoo and at the International Conservation Center as required, such as Learning Adventure, outreach programs, virtual offerings, scout programs, and weekend programs for individuals and families.
- Assist in the training of part-time and seasonal education program staff to create and deliver high-quality education programs;
- Facilitate the presentation of Animal Ambassadors of diverse taxa following specified animal handling and training protocols;
- Coordinate and clearly communicate across departments and with zoo partners to facilitate all aspects of program planning and delivery, including organizing tours, behind-the-scenes experiences, and guest speakers;
- Performs all administrative duties related to their programs;
- Works within the established budget purchasing equipment and supplies;
- Maintains student records, as necessary.

- Supervises and evaluates summer seasonal staff and interns as directly related to teen and young adult programs, camps, and community outreach;
- Participates in various Zoo committees as assigned;
- Performs other related duties as required.

- Provides excellent customer service in the areas of guest relations and park beautification:
- Answers visitor inquiries or finds someone who can;
- Is knowledgeable of location of exhibits, restrooms, concessions, rentals, etc.
- Disposes of litter and waste throughout the park and zoo facilities.
Education/Experience/Knowledge/Skills
B.S. or B.A. degree in Education, Zoology, Biology, or a related field with a minimum of two years teaching in a zoological park or other informal setting. Strong knowledge of field conservation, ecology, and zoology is required, Strong organizational, time management, and classroom management skills are required, along with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated proficiency with computer software programs, presentation skills and attention to detail are required. Must have the proven ability to work independently and with a remote and in person team members to create and deliver programming while fostering a positive and collaborative team work environment. Experience working with Animal Ambassadors and in environmental education preferred. Department of Human Services Child Abuse History Clearance, Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Records Check, and Federal Criminal History Record Information are required, along with a valid PA driver’s license.
Physical Requirements:
- Manual dexterity to operate office machinery such as personal computer, telephone, facsimile machine, copier, calculator, etc.
- Position is primarily indoors, but also works outdoors and is exposed to all weather conditions.
- Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Some travel may be required.
