Zoo U. | All About Alpacas

For students in grades 9-12

Prepare for the alpacalypse! Or, just prepare to learn all about today’s trendiest camelids and have fun at the same time. In addition to learning about alpaca natural history, we’ll meet with a certified alpaca judge/herd manager to discuss why alpaca genetics are tricky, what makes an alpaca a champion, and alpaca breeding and husbandry. “All About Alpacas” consists of two 4-hour sessions over one weekend. The first class will take place at the Pittsburgh Zoo and will include an encounter with our alpaca herd. For the second class, we’ll be heading out to an alpaca farm in Claysville, PA for a hands-on alpaca experience. Outgoing and return transportation will be provided from the Zoo via school bus.

The Zoo U. program allows high school students to explore new areas of science and conservation in a fun and engaging way. A single Zoo U. registration includes two sessions in the spring.
