THANDI MOVES TO Zoo de Granby, Quebec

The Pittsburgh Zoo is working with Zoo de Granby in Quebec to move Thandi, our 28-year-old female African elephant, to a new home.

The partnership between the two organizations supports breeding efforts to infuse new genetics into the aging African elephant population throughout North America.

Thandi will be joining Zoo de Granby’s current residents, a 20-year-old bull elephant named Tutame and 36-year-old female elephant Sarah.

Zoo de Granby will let Thandi acclimate herself to her new home and then slowly begin introductions between the three elephants.

North American Zoo elephants are incredible ambassadors for their cousins in the wild.

Currently in Africa, about 30,000 African elephants are killed each year, primarily due to poaching and human elephant conflicts.

Zoos like the Pittsburgh Zoo and Zoo de Granby are pivotal in helping to strengthen the visitor-animal connection that leads to support of conservation efforts.
