The Table Is Set for Breakfast with the Animals

August 18, 2026

Breakfast is a very important meal for animals, too. The right food at the right time is essential for their well-being and survival.

A night of fasting leaves animals’ energy reserves depleted. The first meal of the day replenishes these stores, providing the proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals needed for movement, growth, and repair. For herbivores like giraffes or elephants, breakfast often means abundant greens to sustain their large body sizes, while carnivores such as lions may hunt or scavenge in the morning for high-energy meals.

A well-timed breakfast helps maintain physical health, mental alertness, and social behavior. At the Zoo, feeding schedules are designed to mimic natural rhythms, which can improve animal welfare and reduce stress. Proper nutrition from breakfast supports immune function, tissue repair, and metabolic balance.

In natural environments, breakfast can be the difference between survival and starvation. Early morning feeding opportunities are often tied to seasonal food availability, predator-prey dynamics, and migration patterns.

Mornings are an incredible time at the Zoo. This is often when our animals are at their most active and the perfect time for wildlife viewing, so we combined the two for the ultimate early morning adventure: Breakfast with the Animals: Walk on the Wild Side.

This event is a walking tour focusing on your favorite area of the Zoo. Whether you are a mammal maniac, Aquarium addict, or kooky for Kids Kingdom, we have a morning adventure that spotlights the creatures you love!

Enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast on arrival, followed by a guided tour of your selected animal section: Mammals, The Aquarium, or Kids Kingdom. These tours focus on a more personal, guided experience that allows for one-on-one learning as you explore each area and get to know the animals and their unique personalities. Join us on either Saturday, September 12, or Sunday, September 27, for one wild breakfast!
