A Canada lynx at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium has tested positive for COVID-19 in what is the first documented case within the United States. PCR testing has also been submitted for four additional lynxes residing at the Zoo and are awaiting results. The cat began displaying clinical signs including occasional coughing, but overall symptoms have been mild. The feline is expected to make a full recovery.

Two tigers residing at the Pittsburgh Zoo tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this month, and have since made a complete recovery. The lynxes reside in an area near the tigers at the Zoo. While the lynx began exhibiting symptoms later than the tigers, they were likely exposed to the virus in a similar window of time.

The risk of animals spreading the virus to people is considered to be low. All animals will continue to be closely monitored while staff maintain appropriate biomedical security measures.
