Our digital series, Pride In Our People, features the incredible staff at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium through written first-person narratives and/or podcast interviews.
Today, we are featuring Leylah, Assistant Cash Manager!

I started out working at the front gates four years ago as a cashier in the ticketing booths. The job was only meant to be for the summer however they offered to keep me as a part-time staff member year-round. Because they were so flexible, I was able to work with them without it interfering with school. After about two years of working as a cashier, I was offered a position in the cash office as the lead admissions coordinator. Since then I have moved up to the office and work closely with the rest of the finance team.

My job here is to assist in managing and maintaining the cash office and the front gates. My day-to-day responsibilities consist of helping the cashiers set up in the morning, running deposits and attendance queries, keeping track and balancing the vault, counting all the coin revenue we make from our fish feeder and coin funnel, and counting all the cash revenue that we make from the front gates and carousel. When things are less busy,  I take on other miscellaneous tasks around the office to help whoever needs an extra hand.

What interested me the most about working at the Zoo was the idea of working so close to the animals, which has always been a dream of mine. When I first saw the flier for the job fair the Zoo hosted, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to learn more about the animals here. While I don’t work directly with any animals, I’ve had the chance to go behind the scenes and experience being up close with many of them.

The thing I enjoy most about this job has to be the opportunity to work with such amazing people. Everyone in the finance department is so supportive of everything I do in and outside of work. I’ve made so many great friends in my time working here and value all the time I get to spend with them. You truly couldn’t ask for a better work environment than the one we have here.

Thank you for all you do, Leylah!
